Reminiscent of a coastal fishing village, Southampton is a thriving community of about 3000 located at the mouth of the Saugeen River, the home of the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nations and their ancestors.
Known for its beautiful, unspoiled sandy beach and breathtaking sunsets, Southampton has a rich nautical history, with shipwrecks still visible in the clear waters of Lake Huron. Historic Chantry Island is just off the coast where tours of the lighthouse and the keeper's quarters are offered by volunteers from the Chantry Island Institute.
Southampton has a vibrant arts community. The Southampton Art School opened in 1958 and continues to be a cultural centre for the region with classes from painting to drama available from March to October each year. And for over 40 years, the Annual Southampton Craft Show in July has drawn artisans and shoppers to the town.
The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre on Victoria Street North is home to the County Archive with a wealth of historical artifacts from nautical treasures to First Nations pieces. The museum runs many activities and events throughout the year to educate and entertain both children and adults alike.
If you're a music lover, bring a lawn chair and enjoy big band concerts at the bandshell on Fairy Lake during the summer. The small lake is a nature lover's paradise with ducks, swans and other wildlife calling it home.
Southampton also offers an abundance of seasonal activities such as curling, hockey, fishing and boating, which are perfect for the active sportsman.
Southampton's quaint shopping district, casual dining establishments and spectacular scenery make it the ideal location for either a vacation cottage or retirement living. Whether you prefer new condo construction or a historical family home, you can soon be enjoying the vibrant sunsets in Southampton with friends, both new and old.
