Port Elgin is a community in the municipality of Saugeen Shores, along the shores of Lake Huron with a population of over 7,000.
The town was named after James Bruce, Eighth Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, who was Governor General of Canada from 1846 to 1854. In 1873, the village was incorporated, and the arrival of the train brought more trade and people. In that year, the town was home to 941 people. In the 1990s, Port Elgin was merged into the town of Saugeen Shores which is comprised of Port Elgin, Southampton, and the former Township of Saugeen.
Port Elgin has always been a tourist destination. Evidence of this started in the 1880's with passenger boats largely from the U.S. visiting this area. Tourism continues today in Port Elgin as one of the town's main industries.
Port Elgin offers over 10 kilometers of fine sandy beaches complete with a wheel chair accessible paved walkway and the most beautiful sunsets. While at the main beach in Port Elgin you can catch a ride on the miniature steam train; while aboard you will be able to see the Port Elgin Harbour, all the sail and motor boats that are docked there are a sight to behold. The train then travels through North Shore Park, which is outfitted with playground equipment for the kids, picnic tables, and a beautiful view of Lake Huron. It is one of many great parks for a picnic on those hot summer days. Summer nights can be spent at the Beach Carnivals which are held Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. or listen to local talents at the Band Shell on Sunday evenings. On Wednesdays don't miss the Port Elgin Flea Market, bargains to be found!
If fishing is your passion you might want to check out The Chantry Chinook Classic fishing derby, the last week of July and first week in August. The competition is exciting and the prizes are substantial for salmon and trout fisherman.

Pumpkinfest is held annually the first weekend in October and offers something for everyone with over 45 events and activities and also featuring the largest two day car show in Ontario. In 2004, a new record for the world's largest pumpkin (656 kg) was set at the festival. A new record (761 kg) was again set in 2009.
Port Elgin has a beautiful community complex, where you can enjoy a Saugeen Shores Winterhawks hockey game in the winter. Hockey at its finest.
The main street has a variety of shops and restaurants that are opened 7 days a week, offering something for everyone.
There is a high school and several elementary schools. Port Elgin offers an indoor swimming pool; Port Elgin Cinema's has three movie screens, three private fitness centers. The BMX Bike Track located near the Complex is a great recreational experience.

Port Elgin is one of my favourite places! We love the newly renovated and expanded public library in town, and the ability to 'order in' any items we need through the online library connection. It also appears that Port Elgin is becoming a 'coffee shop' haven, with numerous places to choose from!
