How to Save Money on Heating Costs During the Winter

During the winter, many people splurge on family celebrations travel and holiday gifts. But do we really need to spend so much money on our heating bills? Here are a number of tips from energy suppliers that will help cut winter energy costs.

1. Turn down the thermostat by 2 degrees. Wear extra socks, slippers, sweaters, and blankets to compensate. This could save 4% on your heating bill
2. Open drapes to let sun in to warm up the house during the day.
3. Close air registers in unused rooms and keep doors, and closet doors shut.
4. Plug any leaks - gaps in weather-stripping, caulk around windows, gaskets behind electrical switches.
5. Plastic window coverings help reduce heat loss through windows.
6. Install programmable thermostats to lower temperatures when no one is home.
7. Use LED light bulbs or compact fluorescent ones.
8. Keep heaters, radiators, and registers unblocked.
9. Make sure doors and dampers on fireplaces are shut when not in use.
10. Install tempered glass doors and heat-air exchange system on fireplaces.
11. After baking, open the oven door to let heat escape and warm up the room.
12. Run dishwasher at night when costs and demand are lower.
13. Wash only full loads of laundry, and at night.
14. Clean your furnace air filter monthly and service your furnace annually.
15. Clean ductwork, wrap hot water tanks with insulation.
16. Get rid of old beer frigs, they are energy gobblers.
17. During winter, keep garage doors tightly closed.
18. Avoid heating your garage if it is not insulated.
