Attention all Fishermen & Women! Fishing in Saugeen Shores

If you are passionate about fishing, Saugeen Shores is the place for you! The waters of Lake Huron are filled with salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, small-mouth and large-mouth bass, northern pike, perch, panfish and whitefish. The Saugeen River also offers plentiful fish and a totally different fishing experience than that on the Lake.

Boats can be launched at the harbour in Port Elgin or from the river launch in Southampton. No boat? No problem! The Saugeen River is well known for its fall and spring runs of salmon and rainbow trout. Chest waders or canoes are appropriate for the river.

The Chantry Chinook Classic is an annual fishing derby that takes place in late July into August and can provide exciting competition and substantial prizes for salmon and trout fisherman. The derby is run by the Lake Huron Fishing Club volunteers that operate the Chinook Salmon hatchery on in Port Elgin. Derby profits have paid for the state-of-the-art fish cleaning station at the Port Elgin Harbour where you can prepare your catch at the end of your trip.

The Lake Huron Fish Club had a kids fishing dock installed in Port Elgin harbor so that they would have some place to fish without getting tangled up in the boats and mooring lines. There are also benches on the dock for parents and grandparents to supervise the children. For children without equipment there is a tackle share program in place at the Port Elgin and Southampton Library.
